My Theory of Writing
Since I started learning English writing has always been hard for me. However, I love writing about my day and stories. In middle school, I noticed how important writing was once I learned more about it. I noticed it wasn’t as easy to just write what’s on my head. I have learned that writing is more than just a pencil and paper. When writing you need to make sure you’re using the right structure since everything goes by steps and one thing can mess up your writing and cause change confusion.
Something I learned about writing is that it’s important that you allow the reader to understand what you are writing. Many people have different styles of writing, which is important because that’s what allows your writing to be strong. The way you write your sentences and the way you but your paragraph together helps your writing seem stronger. It gives meaning and purpose to your writing. For one of my assignments, an inquiry based essay, I needed to do research to support my point for the argumental essay. I needed to support my point and make connections. The essay was about ten pages and I needed to make sure I had a good style or it would make no sense. Without a purpose, my writing wouldn’t make sense and I wouldn’t be able to make my point. However, for essays like this, you need to make sure your topic it’s not too general so you can explain it and go extend your research. Throughout that whole semester we learned how to apply rhetorical terms, which rhetorical situation, audience, author, tone, purpose, genre, medium, stance, and language. They are very important because it makes your writing stronger. Throughout the class, we learned how to use these intro out assignments allowing the reader to have a better understanding of your writing. For example, in my Inquiry-based essay, I applied an informative tone so the audience will know what type of essay they’re reading. The tone is very important because it allows the reader to feel emotion towards what they are reading. At the beginning of the course, we always learned about grammar and punctuation and how to impose that it is. This is actually something I struggle with, but it’s actually one of the most important things about writing. This gives your writing structure and helps it have more meaning to it, which allows the reader to understand what you’re writing and avoid confusion. For example, on my source based on an essay, I need to pick stickers based on my topic and identify the rhetorical terms. I was able to identify all the terms but when it came to explaining I didn’t know how to put it together and my grammar was really bad and my essay didn’t sound right. However this shows how important it is to apply rhetorical terms into your essay because I could have received a failing grade since I understood what the terms were and explained them, it helped my essay seem stronger.
During the class, we always reviewed our work before submitting them. This really helped me because I was able to read other people’s work and help them and that also helped me because I was able to notice what I needed to add to my essay. The person reviewing my work also helped me by giving me their thoughts on what I could have done differently. For example, for my proposal for the inquiry-based essay I needed to make to write my talk about my research and how I’m developing my research. I reviewed it with my classmate and as well as my professor and helped me develop a thesis for my essay as well as a way to do more research for my topic. Throughout this semester I learned many things but I wasn’t able to be very good at everything. Like I mentioned before I struggle with grammar, which is very important to have very good writing. Another thing I struggled with was text citation. In high school, we don’t really use text citation as much, but I was familiar with some of them. When I started this course it was very confusing at first and very hard to understand but with time I learned how important text citation is. For a source-based essay, it’s really important to use MLA format and citation as well by placing adding the author’s last name and page of the number (if it’s numbered) after each citation. I actually received a low grade for that assignment because I didn’t do the right curtain. However, I had the chance to change my work and received a higher grade. This made me realize how even if you have a well-written essay you must know how to use the right text citation.
In conclusion, this freshman composition class made me realize how important your writing is. I started reading my old work and I was able to identify my mistake that I didn’t see before. I developed skills for writing and learned new ways to improve my writing. I realized that good writing also takes time and it shouldn’t be rushed. I know that these techniques and skills that I learned will help me in the future and will be used for all my writing.
